What do teachers think about a Positive Phone Call Home?

The teachers I spoke with feel that making a positive phone call home is important.  Most told me that they try to connect with all their families before the school year begins.  The issue I heard from teachers over and over again was that not all families had working numbers making it difficult to connect with everyone.  These teachers work in a low income inner city environment.

Many teachers spoke of calling families to share positive information and that the parent was shocked that it was not a “bad” phone call.  One teacher shared that there was change in one student in the class because of the positive phone call home.  It was a SLOW change, but there was change.  Another teacher shared that when she called a child’s home the parent began to cry (because they were so happy) and then asked if the teacher would please call the grandparent too!!  I have had students come to me at the end of class and say, “How did I do today?”  The answer from me is more than likely, “You had a great day!”  Next, the child will say, “Would you please call my mom and tell her?”  I then say, “Sure, I would be glad to call.”  BIG SMILES ALL AROUND!!!!

E.T. Phone Home….

It does make a difference!

Here is a link to the Ellen Show giving proof positive that teachers should be making positive phone calls home.
